Game Changers (personal ones): Watches that change Game Changers (personal ones): Watches that change the way you look at watches and what to expect from novelties afterwards – good or bad.

It only happens from time to time and in some cases you don´t even realize it from the beginning. Still, they stick to your mind until they are a kind of reference to others – a kind of benchmark on a certain level.

Unveiled in Basel 1999 the DATOGRAPH (1st generation) was THE talk of the show, for very good reasons. L951.1 was the 1st new chronograph movement designed from the ground up for nearly 20 years – YES Switzerland included!

Keep in mind Lange only (re-) started in 1993 and began to work on this chronograph movement in 1995. It represents the classical Glashütte style but on a level never seen before. Just perfect to show off the impeccable Lange finishing … the classical column wheel in the traditional Lange style, sans polished steel cap, allowing full view of the turrets and the star wheel activation mechanism … and even the pusher feeling has been given a thought (or two) and became (almost; for many) the standard in the industry. A killer movement to get lost with a loupe at hand, on display with a sapphire back on each Datograph. Impressive still today, but even more in 1999.

To get some context about the chronograph competition at that time we include some pictures from a German watch magazine (Uhren Magazin; 2000). Almost no Haute Horlogerie chronographs and only a few brands able to produce their own chronograph movements at all. ETA, Lemania, Zenith, F. Piguet … as suppliers for many. It helps a lot to understand why the Datograph was and still is that important for the success of A. Lange & Söhne.

Not to speak about “shaking assess” in the Swiss watch industry … 😉

Added spice, in case of need 😊, is the precious metal bracelets shown on some pictures. Lange bracelets made in Germany by Wellendorf and out of production for many years – still impressive and outstanding on several levels today.

It only happens from time to time and in some cases you don´t even realize it from the beginning. Still, they stick to your mind until they are a kind of reference to others – a kind of benchmark on a certain level.

It was an announcement which many of the watch collectors still vividly remember, when on 9 September 2005 the Musée International d’Horlogerie (MIH) in La Chaux-de-Fonds presented its own watch, created by what still many refer to as a ‘horological dream team’: Ludwig Oechslin, back then still conservator at the MIH, Paul Gerber, celebrated watchmaker known for using even the tiniest space ‘available’, Christian Gafner, designer, and Beat Weinmann as project manager.

Together they created the MIH Watch as a radically different timekeeper: simple in every aspect, with an annual calendar so cleverly construction that is used only 9 additional parts, a mono pusher chronograph that indicates the elapsed minuted directly on the minute counter axis on the back, and this in a no-nonsense, pure design; offered at a price of less than CHF 6000.

It gave a completely different notion to ‘complexity’ in that it defined it as an involved thought process which aims to boil a problem down to its bare minimum, a notion which eventually gave rise to the Ochs und junior brand by Oechslin and Weinmann.

Even if that does not appeal to you, its impossible to overlook the concentrated brilliance of the group of creators of this watch!

What is your personal ´game changer` if we may ask?

In 2001 the then Ulysse Nardin owner and CEO Rolf Snyder and technical virtuoso Ludwig Oechslin presented their first ‘Freak’ – a ground-breaking piece that turned ‘watchmaking’ into ‘kinetic art’: not separate movement, hands or dial, it was an all-integrated holistic concept with the entire movement rotating around the dial, with its bridges doubling as hands, and add to this the use of silicon and LIGA technologies – quite advanced at the time and still contemporary today.

The construction made a conventional crown impossible, hence the iconic knurled bezel that doubled for winding and time setting.

For quite a few it was just too much back in those days and still today it is for some 😊
